Can someone help me with puppy potty training?

I have a nine week old GSD Border Collie X, and we've trained him to go on puppy pads. However, in the early hours of the morning, he will relieve himself on a mat by the door. We also find puddles scattered about. We keep him on the main floor at night, while we sleep upstairs. Is that the problem? Should we buy a crate for him to sleep in?

Question on Crate training dogs.?

I already know allot about crate training. Like how dogs don't want to mess their own beds so they hold it in. And how in your spare time when you can't supervise your non- housebroken dog you just leave them in the crate. My question was though, Whats the maximum you can leave your dog in a crate? Like how long after eating can they hold it in, I know that younger pups hold it in shorter. Can someone elaborate on the different ages and stages of how long certain aged dogs can hold it in after eating ? How do you keep them not bored in there ?
