Golden Retriever Training

Training a golden retriever can be real fun. This is because Golden Retrievers are active, alert, responsive, sociable and frolicsome. As they love to be in the company of human beings, you can train these creatures to suit your likings perfectly. A well trained Golden Retriever can be the most reliable and amenable companion you can have.

The best time to start your golden retriever training is when the dog is between 8 to 12 weeks old. This is the most impressionable period of their growth and so can pick lessons quickly. To start with you need to teach the dog how to be obedient. What you teach will remain with it for the rest of its life.

To impart proper training to your dog you need to follow a strict routine. You need to be very patient. They are sensitive to ill-treatments. So take your own sweet time while the dog slowly learns the trick. With your arms and the command stand help your puppy stand up. Repeat every command emphatically so that the dog learns to distinguish one from another. Once the puppy knows how to stand on two legs, you can teach it how to extent one of its leg as a gesture to a handshake. Likewise you need to teach the dog how to prepare itself for a groom or bath or teeth wash.

Golden retriever training is just not about teaching a few tricks, It also involves teaching the dog develop certain healthy habits for himself. Chide the dog if it tries to eat anything lying on the floor or on the ground. Oblivious to the dogs attention, you can drop a few dog biscuits on the floor and train its habit slowly. Teach it to eat only from the meal bowl. Also chide the dog for accepting food from strangers. Much in the same way, chide the dog for improper toilet manners. Help it inculcate the right toilet manners.

Leash training is an important aspect of golden retriever training. Do not tie a leash to the golden retriever band and drag it around. Let the dog get used to the leash in the beginning. This can be done by tying a collar and a leash and leaving it in the garden. Once it gets used to a leash, you can start pulling your dog around.
